The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority, popularly known by its acronym UPEIDA was set up under U.P Industrial Area Development Act, 1976. UPEIDA act as a Nodal Agency for implementation of Expressway projects in the State entrusted by GoUP. Presently, GoUP has entrusted UPEIDA to implement two Greenfield Access Controlled Expressway projects on Engineering Procurement & Construction (EPC) mode.

Agra-Lucknow Expressway

This Greenfield Expressway project is 302.22 km long, starts from Agra passes through  Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etawah, Auraiya, Kannauj, Kanpur Nagar, Unnao, Hardoi and ends at Lucknow districts. The expected travel time from Agra to Lucknow shall be reduced to 4 hours. The width of the Expressway will be 6 lanes (expandable up to 8 lanes with all structured as 8 lanes) with a design speed of 120 km per hour. Inauguration of this expressway has been done on 21.11.2016 and at present this Expressways is operational.

Purvanchal Expressway

This Greenfield Expressway project is 340.824 KM long, starts from Lucknow passes through districts Barabanki, Ayodhya. Amethi, Sultanpur, Ambedkarnagar, Azamgarh, Mau and ends at Ghazipur. Purvanchal Expressway 6 lane (expandable to 8 lane with all structures as 8 lane) Access Controlled expressway project with design speed of 120 km/h. An opening of main Carriageway is proposed by March 2021.

Bundelkhand Expressway

This Greenfield Expressway project is 296.07 KM long, starts from Chitrakoot passes through districts Banda, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Auraiya and ends at Agra-Lucknow Expressway in district Etawah. Bundelkhand Expressway is 4 lane (expandable to 6 lane with all structures as 6 lane) Access Controlled expressway project with design speed of 120 km/h. This Expressway is under construction and expected to be operational at the end of year 2022.

Gorakhpur Link Expressway

This Greenfield Expressway project is 91.352 KM long, starts from Gorakhpur passes through districts Ambedkarnagar, Sant Kabirnagar and ends at Purvanchal Expressway in district Azamgarh. Gorakhpur Link Expressway is 4 lane (expandable to 6 lane with all structures as 6 lane) Access Controlled expressway project with design speed of 120 km/h. This Expressway is under construction and expected to be operational in the year 2023.

Besides above Expressways projects, UPEIDA is also intending to develop 594.00 Km long Ganga Expressway from Meerut to Prayagraj. Ganga Expressway will pass through districts Ghaziyabad, Hapur, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shajhapur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rai Bareily and Pratapgarh. 

All Expressway have provision of interchanges, underpasses for cross roads, pedestrians and animals, green belt as per IRC: SP: 21-2009 specifications and service road. Provision has also been made for rest areas, petrol pumps, service stations and restaurants etc.

The benefits that will be accrued with the implementation of these Expressway projects of Uttar Pradesh are, Accelerated Convenient transportation, significant savings in fuel and better pollution control, social and economic development of the areas covered under the Projects, encouragement to agriculture, commerce, tourism & industrial development, accelerated business facilities among important cities.

These Expressway shall also catalyze development and setting up Handlooms, Food Processing, Cold Storages, Warehousing and Milk based industries and will also provide opportunities for setting up new Industrial Training Institutes, Educational Institutes, Medical Institutes and possibilities of establishment of New Satellite/Smart Cities shall increase.

Defence Corridor

The UPDIC is planned across 6 nodes namely – Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Agra Aligarh, Chitrakoot, which spreads across Central, East, West region of Uttar Pradesh and along the Golden Quadrilateral connecting Delhi – Kolkata supported by networks of expressways as under:

  • Yamuna Expressway
  • Agra – Lucknow Expressway
  • Purvanchal Expressway
  • Bundelkhand Expressway
  • Gorakhpur Link Expressway
  • Ganga Expressway

Industrial Corridor

Integrated Manufacturing and Logistics Clusters (IMLC) alongside Expressways to further give a fillip to boost the economic development potential of the State, UPEIDA is now developing Industrial Corridors along its expressways which would encompass various industrial nodes as Integrated Manufacturing Logistic Clusters (IMLCs). The larger vision of UPEIDA through the development of these IMLCs is

  • To promote industrialisation in the region by leveraging the inherent resources / industrial potential
  • Creating opportunities to provide employment for Socio – Economic Development of the region, and
  • To promote balanced regional development in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
